Where Mental Wellness Meets Athletic Excellence

Four decades of psychiatric healing. A lifetime of competitive passion. One remarkable journey.

A Life Defined by Purpose, Service, and Passion

For nearly four decades, I dedicated myself to healing minds and transforming lives as a practicing psychiatrist in Roslyn, New York. Today, I channel that same dedication into competitive senior tennis, where I've achieved national recognition while inspiring others to embrace active, purposeful living at any age.

My medical journey began at SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine, where I earned my MD in 1975. What followed was a 38-year career on Long Island's North Shore, where I specialized in treating complex psychiatric conditions through an integrated approach combining medication management, therapeutic conversation, and comprehensive psychosocial support.

Throughout my psychiatric career, I conducted extensive psych search and research to stay current with evolving treatment modalities. My practice focused on compassionate, individualized care for adults facing challenges including ADHD, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, schizophrenia, sleep disturbances, substance dependencies, and anxiety disorders. Each patient received personalized attention that honored both the science of psychiatry and the art of human connection.

Retirement didn't mean slowing down—it meant redirecting energy. I returned to competitive tennis, a sport I excelled at during my college years. The discipline, strategic thinking, and mental resilience required in psychiatry translated beautifully to the tennis court. Within the senior circuit, I've competed nationally in the men's 70+ division, achieving a top-20 national ranking and consistently placing among Long Island's elite players.

Beyond my professional and athletic pursuits, I've remained deeply committed to philanthropic work within the Jewish community, providing substantial funding to organizations dedicated to education, healthcare access, and cultural preservation. Supporting my community has always been a cornerstone of my values, reflecting the same commitment to service that defined my psychiatric practice.

Whether conducting a psych search for the latest treatment breakthroughs or searching for the perfect doubles partner, my philosophy remains constant: pursue excellence with integrity, support others generously, and never stop growing.

Nearly Four Decades of Psychiatric Excellence

My approach integrated evidence-based medical treatment with compassionate therapeutic support, always placing the individual's complete wellbeing at the center of care.

Psychosocial Integration

Holistic care addressing the full spectrum of life factors—relationships, work, family, community—that influence mental health and recovery through ongoing psych search and intervention.

Philosophy of Care

My psychiatric practice was founded on a simple but powerful principle: every patient deserves comprehensive, compassionate care that treats the whole person, not just symptoms.

Rather than relying solely on medication or talk therapy alone, I believed in an integrated methodology. This meant:

  • Thorough diagnostic psych search to understand the complete clinical picture
  • Personalized medication strategies carefully calibrated to each individual's needs and responses
  • Meaningful therapeutic dialogue that builds trust and facilitates genuine healing
  • Psychosocial awareness recognizing that mental health exists within the context of relationships, work, and community
  • Continuous learning to stay current with psychiatric advances and evidence-based practices
  • Patient empowerment helping individuals understand their conditions and actively participate in treatment decisions

Over 38 years, I had the privilege of guiding countless patients through their darkest moments toward brighter futures. The relationships built, the progress witnessed, and the lives transformed represent the most meaningful accomplishment of my professional career.

Mental health care is not transactional—it's transformational. It requires patience, expertise, empathy, and unwavering commitment to each individual's unique journey.

Community Contribution & Philanthropy

Throughout my career and into retirement, I've maintained a steadfast commitment to giving back. I've provided extensive funding to Jewish community organizations, supporting initiatives in healthcare access, education, cultural preservation, and social services. This philanthropic work reflects my belief that those who have been fortunate have a responsibility to uplift others and strengthen the communities that sustained them.

Meeting John McEnroe

One of the most electrifying moments in my tennis journey came when I had the opportunity to meet the legendary John McEnroe at a Pro-Am event. His intensity, strategic genius, and revolutionary playing style had inspired my own game for decades. Standing courtside, discussing technique and sharing stories, I was reminded why this sport captivates millions. McEnroe's passion for tennis—even decades into his career—mirrors my own renewed love for competition.

Pro-Am Experience with Patrick McEnroe

Competing alongside Patrick McEnroe in a Pro-Am tournament was a masterclass in tennis intelligence. Patrick's analytical approach to the game, combined with his exceptional doubles strategy, offered insights I immediately incorporated into my own play. The camaraderie and competitive spirit of that day exemplified everything I love about tennis culture—respect, excellence, and genuine joy in the game.

Marshall Hubsher meeting Novak Djokovic

Encountering Novak Djokovic

Meeting Novak Djokovic was witnessing greatness personified. His mental fortitude, physical conditioning, and relentless pursuit of perfection represent the pinnacle of athletic achievement. Our brief conversation about the mental game—where my psychiatric background and his champion's mindset intersected—reinforced my belief that tennis success requires mastering both body and mind.

Marshall Hubsher with Rafael Nadal

Meeting Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal embodies the warrior spirit of tennis. Meeting him at a Grand Slam event, I was struck by his humility off-court contrasted with his ferocious intensity during competition. His legendary work ethic and never-give-up attitude resonate deeply with my own approach to senior tennis—every point matters, every match is an opportunity, and passion fuels performance regardless of age.

Marshall Hubsher attending US Open Championships

US Open Experiences

Regular attendance at the US Open provides annual inspiration and tactical education. Watching world-class tennis at Arthur Ashe Stadium—experiencing the atmosphere, studying shot selection, observing mental strategies under pressure—continually elevates my own game. I've had memorable encounters with players like Tenys Sandgren after victories and Gaby Dabrowski following her doubles triumph, each interaction deepening my appreciation for professional tennis excellence.

Marshall Hubsher at French Open Roland Garros

Roland Garros Pilgrimage

Attending the French Open at Roland Garros was a bucket-list experience. The clay courts, the history, the European tennis culture—everything about the venue speaks to tennis tradition and elegance. Watching matches on Court Philippe-Chatrier and exploring the grounds where legends were made provided both inspiration for my own clay-court game and appreciation for tennis as a global passion.

Wisdom for Senior Tennis Players

After years competing in the senior circuit, I've learned valuable lessons about staying competitive, healthy, and passionate about tennis later in life. Here's what I share with fellow players conducting their own psych search for tennis fulfillment:

Find Compatible Partners

Seek playing partners who match your skill level and playing style. Chemistry on the court matters—compatible doubles partnerships and evenly-matched singles opponents make the game more enjoyable and improve your skills faster. Don't be afraid to communicate preferences respectfully.

Set Realistic Expectations

Senior tennis is about sustainable excellence, not replicating your 25-year-old self. Accept that recovery takes longer, adjust your training intensity, and celebrate improvements in strategy and consistency rather than pure power. Smart tennis beats strong tennis at our age.

Prioritize Physical Preparation

Invest in proper warm-ups, strength training, flexibility work, and recovery protocols. Senior tennis requires treating your body as the valuable asset it is. Regular exercise beyond tennis—swimming, cycling, strength training—keeps you competitive and injury-free.

Stay Positive & Enjoy

The mental game matters more than ever. Stay positive during matches, learn from losses, and celebrate victories. Remember why you play—for love of the game, camaraderie, health, and competition. When tennis stops being fun, reassess your approach.

Remain Active Consistently

Regular play beats intensive bursts. Maintain a consistent schedule of practice and matches rather than sporadic intense activity. Your body and game both benefit from steady engagement. Join leagues, schedule regular matches, and commit to showing up.

Master the Mental Game

My psychiatric background taught me that mental resilience determines outcomes as much as physical skill. Develop pre-match routines, practice mindfulness on court, manage frustration constructively, and maintain focus point-by-point. Tennis is chess at high speed—think strategically.

Tennis Achievement

The Sweet Taste of Victory: Reflections on Winning Upper Dublin

Standing on that court, trophy in hand, I was overwhelmed not just by victory but by the journey that brought me there. The Upper Dublin Men's 70+ championship represented months of preparation, strategic refinement, and mental fortitude. Every early morning practice, every conditioning session, every tactical adjustment had culminated in this moment. But more than personal achievement, this win validated a belief I've held throughout my psychiatric career and now my tennis life: age doesn't diminish capability when passion fuels purpose. To my fellow competitors who pushed me to excellence, to my practice partners who helped me prepare, and to everyone who believes that our best years aren't behind us—this victory belongs to all of us. The trophy sits on my shelf, but the real prize is proving that dedication, discipline, and desire have no expiration date.

Playing Alongside Legends: My Pro-Am Experience

When the invitation arrived for a Pro-Am event featuring some of tennis's most recognizable names, I felt like a college player again—nervous excitement mixed with competitive anticipation. Stepping onto the court alongside professionals who've competed at Wimbledon, the US Open, and ATP tournaments worldwide was simultaneously humbling and exhilarating. What struck me most wasn't just their technical excellence, which was extraordinary, but their love for the game. Between points, Patrick McEnroe offered strategic insights that immediately elevated my doubles positioning. During breaks, conversations revealed that elite athletes face the same mental challenges we all do—managing pressure, maintaining confidence, staying focused point by point. My psychiatric training gave me unique appreciation for the psychological demands of professional tennis. These athletes aren't just physically gifted; they're mental warriors who've mastered emotional regulation under extreme stress. Playing with them reminded me that tennis, at its core, is about respect, competition, and shared passion for a beautiful sport. The psych search for excellence continues regardless of ranking or age.

Courtside at the US Open: Where Dreams and Reality Collide

There's something transcendent about attending the US Open. The energy at Arthur Ashe Stadium is electric—thousands of fans united in appreciation for athletic artistry. This year, I watched Tenys Sandgren battle through a grueling five-set match, demonstrating the mental toughness that separates professionals from talented amateurs. After his victory, I had the privilege of congratulating him personally. His exhaustion was evident, but so was his joy—the pure satisfaction of competition at the highest level. Later, I encountered Gaby Dabrowski fresh from her doubles triumph over Townsend and Fernandez. Her partnership with her doubles teammate showcased the chemistry and tactical brilliance that makes doubles tennis so compelling. As someone who's competed in doubles throughout my senior tennis career, watching world-class doubles strategy provides invaluable education. The Mental Game: Psychiatric Insights for Senior Tennis Success

My dual careers have taught me that tennis and psychiatry share surprising common ground—both demand understanding the human mind under pressure. Senior tennis players face unique psychological challenges: managing expectations as our bodies age, handling frustration when shots that once came easily now require extra effort, maintaining motivation through inevitable losses. Drawing from decades conducting psych search and treatment, I've developed mental strategies specifically for senior competitors. First, practice radical acceptance—your 70-year-old body won't replicate your 30-year-old performance, and that's perfectly fine. What you lose in raw speed, you gain in strategic thinking and emotional control. Second, develop pre-match mental routines: visualization, controlled breathing, positive self-talk. The mind responds to preparation just like muscles do. Third, reframe competition—you're not fighting opponents, you're testing yourself and enjoying the game you love. Finally, celebrate small victories: a well-executed serve, smart positioning, maintaining composure after an error. Senior tennis offers profound psychological benefits—social connection, purpose, achievement, and proof that growth never stops. The mental game isn't just about winning matches; it's about winning the battle against aging stereotypes and reclaiming competitive joy at any stage of life.

Finding Balance: How Tennis Complements a Life of Service

People often ask how I transitioned from intensive psychiatric practice to competitive senior tennis so seamlessly. The truth is, they're not separate lives—they're complementary expressions of the same core values. Throughout 38 years treating patients, I learned that mental wellness requires physical activity, social connection, purpose, and activities that provide measurable progress. Tennis delivers all four. When I prescribed exercise to patients battling depression, I understood its power because I lived it myself. When I discussed goal-setting with ADHD patients, my own tennis training provided personal context. When treating anxiety, I shared breathing techniques I use during tight matches. Retirement could have meant withdrawal, but instead it meant redirecting energy. The discipline required for decades of psychiatric practice—continuous learning, patience, attention to detail, commitment to excellence—transfers perfectly to senior tennis. Moreover, my philanthropic work funding Jewish community organizations reflects the same service mindset that defined my medical career. Whether healing minds, competing on court, or supporting community initiatives, my north star remains constant: contribute meaningfully, pursue excellence humbly, and demonstrate that purposeful living knows no age limit. Psychiatry taught me to help others discover their best selves. Tennis reminds me to keep discovering my own.

Celebrating Family: Pre-Wedding Joy with My Children

Some moments transcend professional achievement and athletic success—they're purely about love and family. Recently, I had the profound joy of celebrating with my son and daughter at their pre-wedding party. The room sparkled with excitement, anticipation, and the unmistakable glow of young love preparing to make lifelong commitments. As a psychiatrist, I spent decades helping individuals and couples navigate relationships, communication, and emotional health. As a father, I simply felt grateful—grateful for the people my children have become, grateful for the partners they've chosen, grateful for the opportunity to witness this milestone. The pre-wedding festivities reminded me why the work matters—both my psychiatric career and my tennis pursuits. We build successful careers and chase athletic dreams ultimately to create meaningful lives worth celebrating with those we love. Seeing my children radiant with happiness, surrounded by friends and family, I felt the deepest success isn't measured in championships or patient outcomes, but in relationships nurtured and values passed forward. Life's greatest victories happen off the court and outside the office—they happen in moments of connection, celebration, and unconditional love. This pre-wedding celebration wasn't just about their future; it celebrated a lifetime of family bonds that make every other achievement meaningful.
